Gartenreich Wörlitz

In 1765, the England enthusiast Leopold III. Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau took the first step to create an extensive park based on the English model in Wörlitz. Only four years later, the Wörlitz Castle, the founding building of German classicism, was built here. This means that Prince - and later Duke - Franz is way ahead of his time!

The landscape park with its classical and neo-Gothic buildings forms the prelude and aesthetic climax of a unique program to beautify the country and improve life that Prince and later Duke Franz wanted to achieve in his little country. He is considered the epitome of the Enlightenment in Germany. Over time, it has become a pilgrimage destination for visitors and a model for many other parks. Thanks to the restoration work, it has lost none of its beauty and appeal to this day.
